This piece is complete with exquisite, colorful apple
wood, flawless form, imaginative style, and hand carved, relieved cracks. One of the
major significances of this vase is the way the cracks have been handled. Mark began
"relieving" cracks (the natural checks that occur during drying) in the early
70's by hand carving and sanding them. The effect was a "Kanji - like"
(Japanese calligraphy characters) design aspect which is integral to the design of the
piece. It is part of an overall design philosophy that Melvin has developed (and
historically implemented) to accept all the irregularities of the wood as being meaningful
and critical to the design.

This Closed Mouth
Vase made of New England apple tree wood
has a quiet demeanor. Born of the form of the simple bud vase, the fullness of this
particular form and exotic nature of the wood make this early work an unusual and
desirable collector's piece. |

Apple Has A
Very
tight, closed grain, and is often difficult to control because it checks dramatically
during drying. These checks, however, contribute beautifully to the overall design
of this piece. |
