The Giant American Elm began failing due
to the "elm blight" (a disease affecting many northern state's elm trees)
beginning in the mid-seventies. Mark and Melvin discovered several standing dead elm
burl trees in the State of Pennsylvania in the mid-seventies and harvested and transported
the wood back to New Hampshire. The Lindquists consider this wood some of the most
special they have ever harvested. This prime example exhibits all of the aspects of
character they look for in wood.

This Very Special
Spalted Elm Burl piece has all the attributes
collectors and museums seek in an early Melvin Lindquist masterpiece: perfectly placed
bark craters, gorgeous burl, deep rich black zone line spalting, contrasting wood colors,
timeless form, and technical achievement. |

Spalted Elm Burl
is a medium density northern hardwood, generally regarded by New England farmers as
"barn floor wood" due to its twisty, gnarly grain and toughness. Farmers
liked it because cows' hooves would not tear up the tough elm like they do other
hardwoods.. |
