Claro Walnut
Burl has rich dark chocolatety browns ranging from deep
tonal regions to bright golden hues. This particular piece of claro came from the
West Coast and has beautiful burl eyes (dormant bud burl swirls) and delicate, striking
grain. Melvin typically translates into wood early prehistoric ceramic vase
forms common to many cultures. In this piece he plays with the lip of the vase,
enlarging and rolling it, updating a classic form. Quiet and unpretentious, this
vase rests tranquilly upon its ringed foot. Gradually, the impression of overflowing
water asserts itself, rising up out of the mouth, then falling down over the vase. |
