A Beautiful
rolled lip adorns this striking walnut vase. Melvin's
trademark design elements - cracks (subtly sanded to enhance the form), voids, bark
inclusions and other irregularities are all part of the design scheme. It wasn't
until the early 1970's that irregularities and imperfections were viewed as an integral
design element of the turned vessel. This was a conscious design innovation led by
Melvin and his son Mark that took the woodturning world by surprise... Melvin's early technique (late 60's) of hollowing the interior of
the vessel through a small hole would also have a major impact on the field at
large. He calls this technique "blind boring"... |
